Eala savors Filipino support in Italy

Filipino fans in Italy will be backing Alex Eala as she chases glory in the Rome Open that started last Tuesday at the Foro Italico Stadium.

In an interview with Tennis Channel, the 19-year-old Eala said she was overwhelmed to see the large Filipino community in Rome, most of them roaming the streets while wishing her well as she embarks on yet another crucial tournament.

“I didn’t expect such a big Filipino population here in Rome but even just walking the streets, I’ve run into Filipinos five times already,” said Eala, who is at No. 70 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association ranking.

“When we walk in the streets, you know when you’re seeing another Filipino! It’s such a blessing, of course, to have such a big community. So many places feel like home because of that.”

Eala had already kicked off her Rome Open campaign. She is competing with Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in the Round of 128 at press time.

After Rome Open, Eala will see action at the Parma Ladies Open at the Tennis Club Parma also in Italy, which is part of her preparation for the main draw of the French Open.
