MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala of the Philippines clinched a semifinals berth in the Lexus Eastbourne Open on Thursday.
Eala defeated Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the quarterfinals in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
It was a follow up to her Round of 16 upset of Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, who had to pull from the match because of an injury.
With her victory, Eala also reached 64th in the live rankings of the Women’s Tennis Association, which could potentially be her career best.
The 20-year-old is set to face Varvara Gracheva of France in the semifinal. Eala previously defeated Gracheva in the Nottingham Open qualifiers over the weekend.
