Breezy win for Eala, Gauff

MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala of the Philippines and Coco Gauff of the United States steamrolled the Italian tandem of Tyra Caterina Grant and Lisa Pigato, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the women’s doubles quarterfinals of the Italian Open yesterday in Rome.
The Filipina-American duo needed only 66 minutes to dispatch the home bets, owning the last three games of the second set to pull away from a 3-all deadlock and complete another sweep.
They will face another Italian pair in Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, the third seeds who scored a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan for a place in the semis.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner geared up for the first true test of his pre-Roland Garros form after cruising past Jesper de Jong as Aryna Sabalenka’s bid for a first Rome title continued with a straight-sets win over Marta Kostyuk.
