Alex Eala gears up for US Open debut amid setbacks

After a brief pause to heal and recharge, Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala is back on the hard courts, laser-focused on preparing for the prestigious US Open set from August 24 to September 7 in Queens, New York.

The 20-year-old took a short break following a first-round exit at the National Bank Open in Montreal, where she faced former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic. That match left Eala nursing a minor shoulder injury, prompting her to skip several tournaments to prioritize recovery.

Her absence from competitive play cost her a slight dip in the WTA live rankings, sliding from No. 67 to No. 69—and with her recent withdrawals from the Cincinnati Open and Mexico’s Monterrey Open, there’s a chance she may drop further in the coming weeks.

Still, Eala is turning this setback into an opportunity. By stepping away from the tour’s grind, she’s channeling all her energy into fine-tuning her form, sharpening her game, and ensuring she’s at peak condition for what will be her very first appearance in the US Open main draw.

For Eala, this is more than just another tournament—it’s a chance to make history, represent the Philippines on one of tennis’s biggest stages, and prove that every setback can be the start of a greater comeback.
